Help me work out an earnings starting point

Start with reported EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation), after any owner pay already expensed. Replace that pay once with the full market cost of the owner’s work. Ask your accountant to check every input and adjustment.

Use the same financial period for all figures.

Only pay included as an expense in the EBITDA above. Enter 0 if none.

Full cost of replacing the owner's work. Enter 0 only if no replacement is needed.

Costs already expensed above, without duplicating owner pay.

Income included above that is not expected to recur.

Using the tool

How to use this NZ business value calculator

Enter maintainable earnings after a market cost for the owner’s work. The calculator multiplies that figure by an assumed band; you can compare your own earnings and multiple assumptions. The starting bands are Rodara assumptions, not current sector medians or a buyer’s offer.

What does the result leave out?

Cash, debt, stock, working capital, property, costs and tax need separate consideration. A loss-making or unusual business may need another method.
